Queens Day in Amsterdam
Throughout Amsterdam
Apr 30, 2007
Queen's Day is a Dutch national holiday in honor of the previous queen's birthday on 30 April. Dress up in orange and go up to Amsterdam. No city in the Netherlands offers such an excited environment.
Actually, the festivities already start on the eve of Queen's Day, Queen's Night, when thousands of people go out into the streets to take an advance on the day that follows. Soon afterwards, at 6 am, the street market starts in the city centre and beyond, offering second-hand clothes, furniture and other trinkets for next to nothing. The streets are also filled with young and more skilled artists, food stands, and bands and, above all, many visitors clothed in orange.
Last year, the Amsterdam Vrijmarkt was visited by 600,000 people. Since the same amount of visitors is estimated during the next edition, you are advised to travel to Amsterdam by public transport.
Sand Sculpture Festival
Scheveningen Beach
April 30 through June 1, 2007
The International Sand Sculpture Festival 2007 starts on Monday April 30. Along a 1.5-kilometer-long stretch of beach, huge sculptures will be created from sand. This year's theme is 'Made in Holland'. The opening of the festival coincides with the beginning of the beach season.
On Saturday May 5, a professional jury will judge the works of art. The members of the panel base their judgement on the artistic value, degree of technical complexity and composition of the sculptures.
The beachside location enhances the environment of the festival. At night this is non-breakable even further as the sculptures are lovingly lit. The beach pavilions and pubs and restaurants along the boulevard are great places to enjoy a drink and a snack while traveling from sculpture to sculpture
