Papendrecht city is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, along the River Beneden Merwede. Papendrecht is a typical dike town. The city’s perfect location helped the early inhabitants to settle down mainly along the river and benifitted trade and work, such as shipyards, cane cultivation and fishing for food and trade. The city has developed at the end of the nineteen fifties when it evolved into its present form. Due to this development Papendrecht hasn’t got a historical centre.
In the past Papendrecht city has been functioning as the link between the important city of Dordrecht and its surroundings. In the old days monks (papen) took passengers across the river the Merwede, Drecht is a place where the river can be crossed. The little statue of Aaichie symbolises the history of Papendrecht, Aaichie is peeling peas, an activity of the poor peasants in the past. Peeling peas made them a little extra money. It gave the Papendrecht people their nickname: pea-peeler.
